Wyoming After 3PM is the state's companion to the national America After 3PM study, the largest household survey of afterschool and summer learning programs in the United States. The research provides valuable insights into program participation, parent demand, barriers to access, and the impact of out-of-school time opportunities on young people and families.
The latest survey found that 15% of Wyoming youth—approximately 14,700 students—participate in afterschool programs. Yet demand far exceeds availability. More than 43,000 Wyoming children would be enrolled in an afterschool program if one were available to them, meaning that for every child currently participating, three more are waiting to get in. Cost, transportation, and limited program availability continue to be significant barriers for families.
At the same time, parents overwhelmingly recognize the value of these programs. Ninety-one percent of Wyoming parents report being satisfied with their child's afterschool program, and 80% support public funding for afterschool opportunities. Parents also report that programs help young people build positive relationships, develop life skills, explore STEM learning, and stay engaged in safe, supportive environments after school.
WYEN uses Wyoming After 3PM data to inform policy, strengthen partnerships, identify community needs, and advocate for increased access to high-quality enrichment opportunities so that every Wyoming young person can thrive beyond the bell.
