Guide: Building the Relationships That Help Young People Thrive

"At the core of our work is a question of what it really takes to create strong pathways and handoffs for young people."

When people talk about youth success, they often focus on programs, funding, or outcomes. But a growing body of research points to something equally important: relationships. The Connected Learning Lab from the University of California Irvine explored that idea in their guide published February 27, 2026.

“Strengthening Coordination and Connections: How Out-of-School Time Intermediaries Build Relational Infrastructure and Boost Recruitment and Retention,” highlights the critical role statewide intermediaries play in connecting people, organizations, and opportunities. The Wyoming Enrichment Network is proud to be featured among organizations helping shape this conversation.

In a state where communities are often separated by long distances, strong relationships become the infrastructure that helps young people discover programs and move between experiences. These connections can help young people build pathways toward their goals.

WYEN Director Michelle Sullivan is featured in the guide: "At the core of our work is a question of what it really takes to create strong pathways and handoffs for young people — especially in rural, under-resourced communities that don't have the same infrastructure as urban areas. We're focused on how to build human capacity in these places and how to shift from a scarcity mindset to one of collaboration."

As a statewide intermediary and member of the national 50 State Afterschool Network, WYEN is committed to advancing this work in Wyoming and contributing to the national conversation. When communities invest in connection and collaboration, they create the conditions for all young people to thrive beyond the bell.
